Dr. Thomas C. Kennard ledger

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains an account ledger for Dr. Thomas C. Kennard’s medical practice. It lists accounts for various individuals in Kent County including some free African Americans. Personal letter and documents were interspersed in the ledger and have been removed to a folder. These include accounts, receipts, letters including one from his son, Peregrine Wroth, Ezekiel Chambers, and Harmony School. There are also legal documents including a lease to Swan Creek Farm.

John F. Melvin account books

This collection contains two account books kept by John F. Melvin regarding his business transactions including timber and agriculture. After John’s death in 1876 the accounts were continued by his family. There are many items inserted into the books including receipts, indentures, and a notice of John’s death.

John T. Dodd & Sons records

This collection contains five ledgers covering the history of John T. Dodd & Sons Undertakers. The first ledger is for John T.’s carpenter business it shows various building jobs but also numerous requests for coffins including from slaveowners for their slaves. The later ledgers show how the business moving away from carpentry and more to undertaking with fewer building jobs entered and more entries regarding the detail on the types of coffins made.

This collection contains an account book kept by the Pearce family. James A. Pearce, Sr.'s correspondence with other politicians regarding slavery in Maryland and the lead up to the Civil War. James A. Pearce, Jr.’s lecture notebooks while at Princeton University, correspondence, and a scrapbook he kept of the 1896 presidential election.
